Every cloud has a silver lining

This past weekend was the Provincial Playdowns for the NB Police Curling.  Last year we played in NS and were runner's up.  This year we placed third.  Not bad, right??  Well, it certainly wouldn't be bad...if there had been more than 3 teams in the bonspiel!  We're not too upset about missing out on the trip to the Nationals in Montreal this year.  It would have caused some upset to our scheduled golf week in Myrtle Beach.  There's always next year!!

Although curling remains a popular winter sport in NB, police curling has certainly fallen out of favour.  There was much discussion at the club about how to rejuvenate the whole provincial program and spark some interest amongst the younger members of the policing profession.  Not sure that's possible, but with the newly elected executive of the association, we're hoping for some success.  And speaking of the election...it's easy to see that male chauvinism is still alive and well!!  With 12 curlers in the bonspiel, and only 2 of them female, when it came time to put forward nominations for the executive, they were quick to nominate Kier for a position.  Hmmmm...they nominate him because a) he's a man and it's a man's world after all (wrong!); and b) he retired as a Superintendent so they just assume he'd be a keener (wrong again!).  Just to play into their stereotypes, I volunteered (who's the keener after all??) for the secretary/treasurer position.  I even told them I'd be sure to wear a short skirt for all the executive meetings.  I don't think they understood my sarcasm!!  Surprised?? Not in the least!!

WHAT I LEARNED TODAY:  Watching the scales is a bit like watching my investment balance.  It's not something I should be doing every day, because you don't see much movement.  But wait to check it every week or two, and BANG...big changes...and usually not for the better...neither one!!!
